Ilia Underwing
Catocala ilia
The adult Ilia underwing is a nocturnal moth of oak woods, forest margins, and parks with mature trees. By day it rests flat against bark, where its gray-brown forewings provide excellent camouflage. Adults may take tree sap or juices from fermenting fruit. When flushed, it exposes vivid orange-and-black hindwings that can startle a pursuing predator.
