Black-tailed Prairie Dog
Cynomys ludovicianus

Adult black-tailed prairie dogs live in extensive burrow systems across the Great Plains, especially in dry open grasslands with good visibility. They feed mainly on grasses, leaves, seeds, and other low vegetation, clipping plants around burrow entrances to improve sightlines. Adults rely on digging, vigilant posture, sharp alarm calls, and rapid dives underground to avoid predators. Their alarm calls are unusually complex, with different sounds used for different kinds of threats.
