Mottled Owl
Strix virgata

The mottled owl inhabits forests, woodland edges, and shaded plantations from Mexico through Central America and into northern South America. Mostly active at night, it hunts from a perch and takes insects, rodents, frogs, lizards, and small birds. Its barred and mottled plumage conceals it exceptionally well against tree bark during the day.
