Naval Shipworm
Teredo navalis

Adults live deep inside tunnels bored through submerged timber, pilings, driftwood, and wooden hulls. They rasp wood with their shell valves and filter suspended food through their siphons. Symbiotic bacteria in the gills help extract nutrition from the wood they consume. Calcareous pallets can seal the burrow opening when the animal retracts its siphons.
