Hard Clam
Mercenaria mercenaria
Adult hard clams inhabit sandy and muddy seafloors in coastal estuaries and shallow marine waters. Buried beneath the surface, they draw water through siphons and filter out algae and organic particles. Their heavy paired shell closes tightly against predators and periods of exposure at low tide.
