African Black Beetle
Heteronychus arator

Adult African black beetles inhabit grasslands, pastures, gardens, and cultivated fields, spending much of their time in the soil. They feed on plant material and can chew through young shoots at ground level, while also emerging to move between suitable sites. Males use a small horn-like projection in contests and when forcing through loose earth. The glossy dark adults are strong diggers despite their compact size.
