Red Barbed Ant
Formica rufibarbis

Red Barbed Ants inhabit warm, open ground such as dry grassland, field edges, and sandy soils, where they nest underground. Workers forage actively for insects, honeydew, and other sugary foods, using their mandibles to carry prey and defend themselves. When threatened, they can spray formic acid as a chemical deterrent.
