Speckled Wood Chrysalis
Pararge xiphioides (pupa)

The chrysalis is formed in sheltered vegetation close to the caterpillar's feeding site. It does not eat or move about while the adult butterfly develops inside. Its muted green-brown casing and still posture make it difficult to distinguish from a dead leaf or stem.
