Devastating Grasshopper
Melanoplus devastator
Adult Devastating Grasshoppers inhabit dry grasslands, rangeland, and other open areas with abundant vegetation. They feed on grasses and broad-leaved plants, moving between feeding patches by hopping and flying. When disturbed, an adult can launch abruptly into the air before settling back into cover. Their powerful hind legs provide both rapid escape and a firm defensive kick.
