Notch-mouthed Ground Beetle
Dicaelus purpuratus
This glossy ground beetle patrols woodland floors, grasslands, and cultivated fields, usually sheltering beneath stones, logs, and leaf litter by day. It is a nocturnal predator that seizes caterpillars, insects, and other small invertebrates with powerful jaws. When threatened, it runs quickly for cover and may release defensive chemicals. The adult's metallic purplish sheen is especially noticeable in good light.
