European Pilchard

Sardina pilchardus

European Pilchard

Adult European pilchards live in coastal marine waters and may move between deeper water and the shore with changing seasons. They filter small plankton and other suspended food from the water using fine gill structures. Their oily, nutrient-rich bodies make them an important prey fish for larger marine animals.
