Texas Cichlid
Herichthys cyanoguttatus

Adult Texas cichlids inhabit warm rivers, reservoirs, ponds, and canals, especially around vegetation, rocks, and muddy bottoms. They are omnivores that consume aquatic insects, crustaceans, snails, small fish, algae, and plant matter. Adults defend territories vigorously, particularly during breeding, and excavate or clear nest sites in the substrate. This is the only cichlid species native to the United States, occurring naturally in Texas and northeastern Mexico.
