Barred Tiger Salamander
Ambystoma tigrinum

The adult is a stout, secretive salamander of prairies, grasslands, open woodlands, and farmland, usually spending daylight hours underground in burrows made by other animals. It emerges on wet nights to hunt earthworms, insects, slugs, and small vertebrates with a sudden lunge and strong jaws. During breeding season it returns to fishless ponds or wetlands to lay eggs. Its bold yellow bars and blotches vary widely, and its skin glands can release a noxious secretion when handled or attacked.
