Northern Short-tailed Shrew
Blarina brevicauda

The northern short-tailed shrew inhabits damp forests, meadows, marsh edges, and leaf-littered ground, using shallow tunnels and runways for cover. It is an exceptionally active hunter that eats insects, worms, slugs, small vertebrates, and carrion. Venomous saliva can subdue prey larger than expected for such a small mammal, and surplus prey may be stored for later.
