Western Cattle Egret
Ardea ibis

The adult Western Cattle Egret is a compact white heron of pastures, savannas, croplands, and wetland edges. It often follows cattle, horses, or tractors to snatch insects and other small animals flushed from the grass. Its diet includes grasshoppers, flies, frogs, lizards, and small fish, taken with sudden neck lunges and precise bill strikes. During breeding season, adults develop buff-orange plumes on the head, breast, and back, and the species is famous for its rapid expansion across much of the world.
