Apollo Caterpillar
Parnassius apollo (caterpillar)

The Apollo caterpillar lives on sunny alpine and subalpine slopes where its stonecrop host plants grow among rocks and short turf. It feeds mainly on Sedum and related plants, often basking in the sun between feeding bouts to warm its body. Its black body with orange spots is a warning signal, advertising that it is distasteful to many predators. After several molts, it leaves the food plant to pupate low in vegetation or among stones.
