Red-shouldered Hawk Hatchling
Buteo lineatus (hatchling)

A down-covered hatchling remains in the stick nest in wet woods, wooded suburbs, or forested swamps, depending entirely on adults for warmth and food. It feeds on small pieces of prey brought by the parents, such as frogs, snakes, small mammals, and insects. Its main behavior is begging with sharp calls and gaping, since it cannot yet fly or hunt. Newly hatched red-shouldered hawks are altricial, with closed or barely opened eyes and very little ability to regulate body temperature.
