Luminous Centipede
Geophilus carpophagus
The luminous centipede lives in damp soil, leaf litter, beneath stones, and in decaying wood. It tunnels through loose ground and hunts small invertebrates such as insect larvae, worms, and other soft-bodied soil animals. Its modified front legs, called forcipules, grasp prey and deliver venom. Despite its many legs, it is a secretive nocturnal hunter that is rarely seen on the surface.
