Jack Jumper Ant
Myrmecia pilosula

Jack jumper ants live in open woodland, heath, and grassland in southeastern Australia, nesting in soil beneath stones or vegetation. A worker hunts alone with quick leaps, strong mandibles, and sharp vision, taking insects and other small arthropods. It also collects sweet liquids such as nectar and honeydew. Its sting delivers potent venom and can cause severe allergic reactions in sensitive people.
