Rough-lipped Darkling Beetle
Eleodes hispilabris

Adult rough-lipped darkling beetles inhabit dry, open country, sheltering beneath debris or in soil during the hottest hours. They are chiefly active on the ground and feed on decaying vegetation, seeds, and other available organic matter. When threatened, an adult may raise its abdomen and release a foul defensive chemical, a characteristic defense of Eleodes beetles.
