Brown Hyena
Parahyaena brunnea
Brown hyenas inhabit arid grasslands, scrub, and coastal deserts in southern Africa. They range widely at night, feeding mainly on carrion but also taking small animals, insects, eggs, and fruit when available. Their exceptionally strong jaws can crack and consume bones that many other scavengers leave behind.
