Great Basin Spadefoot

Spea intermontana

Great Basin Spadefoot

Adults inhabit dry sagebrush flats, grasslands, and sandy soils near temporary breeding waters in the Great Basin. Nocturnal hunters, they emerge after rain to eat insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates. A hardened spade on each hind foot helps them dig backward into the soil, where they can remain hidden through dry conditions.
