Black-bellied Slender Salamander
Batrachoseps nigriventris

This tiny, lungless salamander lives beneath leaf litter, rocks, and decaying logs in moist coastal and mountain woodlands of southern California. It is mostly active on damp nights, stalking springtails, mites, small insects, and other tiny invertebrates. Its dark belly and slender, wormlike body help it disappear into soil and woodland debris; it breathes through its skin and mouth lining rather than lungs.
