Wedge-tailed Eagle
Aquila audax
Australia's largest bird of prey, the wedge-tailed eagle occupies open woodland, grassland, deserts, and mountainous country. It soars for long periods while searching for carrion, rabbits, reptiles, and other prey, which it seizes with powerful talons. Pairs maintain large territories and build enormous stick nests. Its long, wedge-shaped tail is a distinctive feature in flight.
