Greater Short-horned Lizard
Phrynosoma hernandesi

The greater short-horned lizard occupies dry grasslands, shrublands, and open rocky country across western North America. It spends much of the day motionless against the ground, ambushing ants, beetles, and other small invertebrates. When threatened, it can flatten or inflate its spiny body and may bury itself in loose soil for cover. A remarkable defense is squirting blood from the corners of its eyes to discourage some predators.
