Tawny Emperor
Asterocampa clyton

Adult tawny emperors frequent sunny woodland edges, hackberry groves, and streamsides in eastern North America. They fly quickly through openings in the trees and often perch on trunks or low vegetation. Adults feed on tree sap, fallen fruit, carrion, and other moist nutrient sources rather than visiting flowers often. The mottled underside of the wings helps a resting butterfly resemble dead leaves or bark.
