Hawaiian Garden Spider
Argiope appensa
The Hawaiian garden spider lives in gardens, forest edges, and shrubland across the Hawaiian Islands, where it builds a large orb web between vegetation. It waits at the web's hub or nearby retreat for flying insects such as flies, moths, and small bees to become entangled. Vibrations in the silk guide a rapid approach, followed by a venomous bite and silk wrapping. Females are substantially larger and more conspicuous than the tiny males.
