Western Hognose Snake
Heterodon nasicus

Western hognose snakes live in sandy prairies, scrubland, and open woodland across central North America. They forage through loose soil for toads, frogs, small reptiles, and rodents, subduing prey with mild rear-fanged venom. Their dramatically flattened hood, loud hissing, and convincing death-feigning display are defensive bluffs rather than aggression toward large animals.
