Kakapo
Strigops habroptila

The kakapo is a large, nocturnal parrot that lives in dense forest and scrub on predator-free islands of New Zealand. It climbs trees with its strong feet and beak, feeding mainly on leaves, shoots, seeds, fruit, and pollen. Though it has wings, it cannot fly and instead uses mottled green plumage and stillness to avoid danger. Males are notable for their deep booming calls during the breeding season.
