Marsh Ramshorn

Planorbella trivolvis

Marsh Ramshorn

The marsh ramshorn is a freshwater snail found in quiet ponds, marshes, drainage ditches, and slow streams with abundant aquatic vegetation. It glides over plants and submerged surfaces, grazing algae, decaying plant material, and biofilm with its rasping radula. When threatened, it withdraws into its flat, coil-shaped shell; like other ramshorn snails, it is a simultaneous hermaphrodite and breathes air with a lung.
