Blood Cockle
Tegillarca granosa

Adults live partly buried in intertidal mudflats, mangrove margins, and shallow estuaries. They filter phytoplankton, microscopic organic matter, and other suspended food from passing water. The red color of their tissues comes from hemoglobin, an unusual oxygen-binding pigment for a bivalve.
