Rhinoceros Iguana
Cyclura cornuta
Adult rhinoceros iguanas inhabit dry forests, thorn scrub, rocky coasts, and limestone terrain on Hispaniola and nearby islands. They spend much of the day basking, foraging, and retreating to burrows or rock shelters, while males defend favored areas with imposing displays. Leaves, flowers, and fruit make up most of their diet, though they may also take small animals or carrion. Mature males develop prominent horn-like nasal scales and can shove or bite rivals during disputes.
