Owl Butterfly
Caligo memnon

Owl butterflies inhabit tropical forests, forest margins, and banana-growing areas of Central and South America. Adults fly low among vegetation and feed on rotting fruit, sap, and occasionally flower nectar. When disturbed, they may expose large eyespots on the underside of their wings, a startling display that resembles the eyes of a larger animal.
