Ornate Biting Midge
Ctenophora ornata
The adult inhabits wooded areas and damp vegetation near sites where larvae can develop in decaying material. It flies delicately through shaded clearings and may take nectar or water, while living only briefly as an adult. Despite its name, this crane fly does not bite people; its striking patterned body is used chiefly in courtship and species recognition.
