Great Crested Newt Larva
Triturus cristatus (larva)

Great crested newt larvae live fully in ponds and ditches, breathing with feathery external gills. They hunt tiny crustaceans, insect larvae, and other small aquatic animals with quick snaps of the jaws. The larva hides among submerged plants, where its narrow body and waving gills help it blend into the water weed. Unlike the adult, this stage is entirely aquatic until metamorphosis.
