Long-tailed Giant Ichneumonid Wasp
Megarhyssa macrura

Adults patrol wooded habitats, especially forests with fallen or dying hardwood containing horntail larvae. They drink nectar and other sugary fluids, while females seek hidden hosts for their offspring. A female probes timber with her exceptionally long ovipositor and drills through wood to lay an egg beside a horntail larva. Despite its intimidating tail-like ovipositor, this wasp does not use it as a venomous sting.
