Great Golden Digger Wasp
Sphex ichneumoneus
Adults patrol sunny fields, gardens, and sandy clearings, visiting flowers for nectar. Females excavate deep soil burrows and hunt katydids and crickets to provision each nest cell. A precise sting paralyzes prey rather than killing it, keeping it fresh for the developing larva.
