common African snail
Achatina achatina

The common African snail lives in humid tropical forest, farmland margins, and gardens where shelter and plant food are abundant. It forages mostly at night, scraping leaves, fruit, fungi, and decomposing vegetation with its radula. During dry periods, it seals itself inside its shell and becomes inactive to conserve moisture. This species is among the largest land snails, with adults capable of growing an exceptionally long, boldly patterned shell.
