Biting Midge
Culicoides imicola

Adult biting midges shelter in vegetation near moist breeding sites and fly most actively around dawn and dusk. Both sexes take plant sugars, while females of many populations also pierce animal skin for a blood meal needed to produce eggs. Culicoides imicola is a known vector of several livestock diseases, including bluetongue.
