European Termite Alate
Reticulitermes lucifugus

European termite alates emerge from underground colonies during warm, humid conditions to make a brief mating flight. They feed primarily on wood-derived material before dispersal, then seek sheltered wood or soil where a new colony can begin. Their long, equal-sized wings allow them to travel away from the parent colony, though they are weak fliers. After pairing, they shed their wings and become the founders of a new nest.
