Mediterranean Termite
Reticulitermes grassei

The Mediterranean termite inhabits subterranean galleries in moist soils, stumps, and structural timber around the western Mediterranean region. It consumes cellulose from wood and other plant material, breaking it down with the aid of gut microbes. Adults travel through covered tunnels to avoid exposure to dry air and predators. This species can be a serious pest when its hidden galleries reach wooden buildings.
