Oval Mushroom Coral
Lobactis scutaria
This solitary mushroom coral lives on shallow, sunlit Indo-Pacific reefs, often resting freely on sandy or rubble-strewn bottoms. Its broad oral disc hosts symbiotic algae and extends tentacles at night to seize zooplankton. Unlike many reef-building corals, an adult can slowly shift position or right itself after being overturned.
