The Penitent Underwing
Catocala piatrix

The adult Penitent Underwing inhabits deciduous forests and wooded edges, where it rests against tree trunks by day. It drinks nectar and other sugary liquids at night, flying readily when disturbed. Its forewings are bark-patterned for concealment, but the hindwings flash a bold orange-red when it takes flight.
