Migratory Grasshopper
Melanoplus sanguinipes
Adults inhabit grasslands, pastures, roadsides, and agricultural fields across much of North America. They feed on a wide range of grasses, forbs, and crop plants, using strong chewing mouthparts. When disturbed, an adult launches with its hind legs and flies away on broad wings; under favorable conditions, large numbers can migrate considerable distances.
