Giant Salmonfly
Pteronarcys californica

The adult giant salmonfly rests on streamside vegetation and flies along clear, rocky rivers during its brief summer life. Adults take little or no food, relying on energy stored during their long nymph stage while seeking mates and places to lay eggs. They are most active around warm days and may gather near water after emerging. Their large, fluttering flight and striking size make them a conspicuous insect along western North American rivers.
