Common Awl-fly
Xylophagus ater

Adult common awl-flies inhabit woodland edges and clearings near decaying timber. They fly between vegetation and may visit flowers for nectar while searching for places to breed. The dark-bodied adults are quick fliers, but their larvae—not the adults—are the predatory stage.
