Sand Bear Spider
Arctosa perita
The sand bear spider lives on sandy heaths, dunes, and open coastal ground, where its mottled body blends closely with the substrate. It is an active nocturnal hunter that stalks and rushes small insects rather than using a capture web. It may dig or shelter in a shallow silk-lined burrow in the sand. Its camouflage makes it remarkably difficult to spot when it freezes against bare ground.
