Wolf Spider
Pardosa lugubris

The wolf spider Pardosa lugubris lives in woodland leaf litter, grassy margins, and heaths across much of Europe. It hunts actively on foot rather than building a prey-catching web, using keen vision and sudden bursts of speed to catch small insects and other invertebrates. Its mottled brown pattern blends closely with soil and dead leaves, while venom delivered through the fangs subdues prey. Females carry their round egg sac attached to their spinnerets and later carry newly hatched spiderlings on their back.
