Danubian Spined Loach
Cobitis elongatoides

Adults inhabit sandy or muddy bottoms in lowland rivers, streams, and connected floodplain pools of the Danube drainage. They forage mainly at night, using sensitive barbels to locate insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other bottom-dwelling prey. A sharp, erectile spine beneath each eye can be raised as a defense when handled or threatened.
