Chinese Pond Heron
Ardeola bacchus

Chinese Pond Herons inhabit ponds, rice paddies, marshes, and slow-moving waterways across eastern Asia. They stalk through shallow water or wait motionless at the edge before lunging at fish, frogs, crustaceans, and insects. Outside the breeding season, their mottled brown plumage provides excellent camouflage, while breeding adults develop a richly colored head and neck.
